Susceptibility survey - Application in Archaeology

  • Investigated property: magnetic susceptibility.
  • Method: Mapping of the surface susceptibility.
  • Instrumentation: Magnetic Susceptibility Meter MS2 (Resolution: 2x10-6 SI [2x10-7 CGS] on x 0.1 range) with MS2D and MS2F probe; Bartington Instruments Ltd., Oxford, UK.

We use Susceptibility measurements for detailed surveys at excavations. They serve to detect ghost features, which are not or almost not visible in profiles and planums during excavtion e. g. weak postholes, stratigraphy of pits or ditches. They might be used in combination with magnetometry or independently.
